Rancho Oso Resort
I had a fantastic vacation at Rancho Oso Resort, so I'm happy to recommend this destination in the mountains above Santa Barbara.
Rancho Oso is part of the Thousand Trails network of campgrounds. This location offers RV spaces with hookups and, also, Petite Retreats lodging options. If you are looking for a rustic experience, you can stay in a covered wagon, teepee or cabin in the Western Village. If you are like me, you can stay in a plush cabin while enjoying views of the charming rustic accommodations.
The property is absolutely beautiful, so it's easy to settle in and feel right at home. There are plenty of amenities and activities, so you can have a good time by yourself or get social and make new friends. Activity information was provided, when we checked in. Many activities were free, wine tasting was just $5, and horseback riding was very reasonably priced.
One of the two swimming pools is heated, so it was warm enough for a Winter swim. Other outdoor activities include hiking trails, mini golf, volleyball, horseshoes, pickleball and basketball. A country store has food, basic supplies and souvenirs. Also, there is limited restaurant service and there are many picnic tables around the property.
The adult lounge has WiFi that worked well enough for me and a cell phone booster that may help you connect. Also, the lounge has games, puzzles, a pool table, free library and plenty of seating, so it's a great place to hang out. The Stone Lodge is open to all ages, so there are more kid-centric activities and supplies there.

Petite Retreats Cabin
Getaway cabin #158 was perfect for me, since it is next to the horses and the Western Village. This gave me the experience I was looking for. If you want a shorter walk to the activities and amenities, there are plenty of cabins and RV spaces in that area.
My cabin had everything I needed, so it was easy to make it my home for the week. The main bedroom has a comfortable queen sized bed and the "bunk room" sleeps two more. Additionally, the living room sofa could be used as a bed.
The kitchen is small, but fully functional. There is a full sized refrigerator, stove, oven, microwave and all of the basic dishes and kitchen tools I needed. I was able to cook up some delicious meals, when I was there. Even things like dish soap and paper towels were provided. Outside was a propane grill and picnic table, so I loved sitting outside to watch the horses and gaze at the view.
Tips for a pleasant stay
This is a remote location in the Los Padres National Forest, so it gets very dark at night, the road in is narrow and curvy and your GPS may cut out before you get there. I recommend planning to arrive during daylight hours and printing out written directions, so you don't get lost. When I drove in during the day, it was easy to see their signs and navigate the narrow road. However, I can see how it would be stressful to do it for the first time in the dark.
Summary
Rancho Oso Resort is an excellent choice for a unique vacation destination, so I enjoyed every minute of it. The property and surrounding mountains are gorgeous. It is the perfect spot to keep busy with activities or to do nothing but relax.
