When I’m traveling, I love to experience the outdoors and often visit parks and other natural areas. It’s a great way to relax or get some exercise while enjoying scenic views.
For those of us who live in Southern California, Oakhurst is on the way to Yosemite. The city is just 14 miles from the south entrance to Yosemite National Park. I’ve stopped in Oakhurst a few times on my way to Yosemite. This time I was looking for a park where I could enjoy a picnic.
Oakhurst Community Park is located just off Highway 49. It’s a convenient stop for people who are staying in Oakhurst and for those who are just passing through and want a break from driving. The park is not visible from the highway, but there’s a sign directing visitors to the parking area that is shared with the library.
There is a bridge with a tree canopy that leads from the parking lot to the park. It looked as if someone was living under the bridge, so I almost turned back. I could see people at the park through the tunnel of trees and felt safe enough to proceed. I didn’t see anyone who concerned me, but would definitely exercise caution here and wouldn’t want to be alone in the park.
The park itself is beautiful. There is a shaded playground with 2 play structures and swings. There are several picnic areas, benches, open space and a walking trail. Since it’s surrounded by trees and has bridge access, it feels very remote even though it’s close to the highway.
