Watching the Sun Set Beside Iconic Morro Rock

Whenever I am traveling along the coast, I always seek out extraordinary spots to watch the day wind down.
Having visited San Luis Obispo and Morro Bay over the years, I knew my very first evening on the Central Coast had to include a trip out to Morro Rock to watch the sun dip below the Pacific horizon.
It turned out to be absolute perfection!

🚗 Stress-Free Drive & Free Front-Row Parking
For anyone accustomed to Southern California coastal traffic, hunting endlessly for parking meters, or paying steep parking lot fees near the beach, heading to Morro Rock is an absolute breath of fresh air.
The drive from my hotel in San Luis Obispo out to Morro Bay was quick and easy.
While there was slightly more traffic than at midday, it was nothing like the heavy bumper-to-bumper congestion I am used to back home in Orange County and Los Angeles.
Even better, Morro Rock features massive parking lots right along the sand and parking is completely free!
While there were plenty of people gathering to enjoy the evening, including surfers catching their last waves of the day and fellow sunset seekers, there were still tons of open spaces in every lot.
I had my pick of front-row spots right next to the beach!

🌅 Breathtaking Silhouettes, Sea Otters & Embarcadero Strolls
Morro Rock is impressive at any time of day, but there is something truly magical about its massive 581-foot silhouette standing tall against the glowing orange and pink sky as the sun goes down.
The overall vibe is wonderfully relaxed and comfortable.
You can sit on one of the benches near the lot, set up a folding chair, or walk directly out onto the soft sand to soak up the stunning coastal views.
The scene was gorgeous, peaceful, and deeply relaxing – the kind of vacation memory that stays with you long after you return home.
I lingered at Morro Rock for a while before taking a short walk over toward the nearby Embarcadero to capture the sunset from different angles along the harbor front.
As an added bonus, I got to watch sea otters swimming and diving for dinner in the calm water as dusk settled over the bay!

📍 Visiting Tips for Sunset Seekers
- Location: Coleman Drive, Morro Bay, CA 93442 (follow Coleman Drive all the way to the base of the rock).
- Cost: 100% Free admission and free lot parking.
- What to Pack: Central Coast evenings cool down quickly once the sun drops behind the horizon, so bring a warm jacket or cozy sweater.
- Bonus Activity: Keep an eye on the sheltered waters near the harbor to spot wild sea otters!
